From Elite Athlete to Successful National Team Coach
Patrick Fischer launched his remarkable career as an ice hockey player with EV Zug, making his debut in Switzerland’s top league in 1992. Over a 17-year playing career, he appeared in 661 National League A games and claimed Swiss Championship titles with HC Lugano and HC Davos. With Davos, he also lifted the prestigious Spengler Cup in 2000.
Fischer made his debut for the Swiss national team in 1996, going on to represent his country in 183 international appearances. A defining career milestone came with the Phoenix Coyotes in the NHL, where he played 27 games during the 2006/07 season before retiring from professional play in 2009.
Coaching Success at the Highest Level
Fischer stepped into head coaching with HC Lugano in the 2013/14 season. In December 2015, he took charge of the Swiss Ice Hockey National Team. Under his leadership, Switzerland claimed silver at the 2018 World Championship in Copenhagen and again at the 2025 World Championship in Stockholm – the country’s second World Championship final within five years, following the silver medal in 2013, a tournament in which Fischer had already served as assistant coach.
In recognition of this achievement, Fischer was named Coach of the Year in 2018, while his team received the Team of the Year award. Despite setbacks – including an early exit at the 2021 World Championship and unexpected quarterfinal defeats against the United States in 2022 and Germany in 2023 – Fischer steadily built the Swiss national team into a respected force in international ice hockey.
A Defining Personal Journey and Leadership Philosophy
One of the most formative chapters in Fischer’s life was his time in North America. During his stint with the Phoenix Coyotes, he navigated a profound personal crisis and found fresh perspective through encounters with Native American communities. The insights he gained there, around happiness, resilience, and the power of collective effort, shaped his philosophy as a leader throughout his coaching career.
As a speaker, Fischer brings the world of elite sport to life with authenticity and impact. He shares hard-won lessons on leadership, team building, and mental strength – drawn from both the highs and the lows of his journey as a player and coach. His talks, delivered in German, English, and Italian, resonate with audiences across industries and backgrounds.
